With gas prices always on the rise and concern for the environment increasing, more people are opting to take public transportation. There’s no reason to be intimidated at the prospect of taking public transportation; a few simple things to keep mind will make you a pro in no time!
Research your route in advance. Check your transit authority’s website for routes and schedules: third party maps such as Google may not have route detours and schedule changes. Many transit authorities can send passenger alerts and route changes to you via text message.
Know your route before you board. Understand where to board and debark the bus; check out stops in Google maps to familiarize yourself with the environment. If you are taking the bus to a scheduled event, like a job interview, take your planned route a day in advance, so you know the stops and have a good idea of how long it will take you to get where you are going on time.
Never be afraid to ask the bus driver questions, but be mindful of others and the bus schedule. Bus drivers are happy to answer quick questions, but they are on a schedule, and the other passengers are trying to keep to their own schedules.
Wear good shoes; you may need to run to flag down a bus, or walk a few blocks to get to your next stop. If you need to wear professional or dress shoes at your destination, carry them in your bag until you get off the last bus.
Carry water, cash for emergency fare, an umbrella to keep the sun off, and anything you need to pass the time. A well-stocked bag is a lifesaver for anyone taking public transportation. It’s also an excellent way to catch up on your reading; just don’t get so absorbed in the book that you miss your stop!
Arrive at your stop 5-10 minutes early. Though drivers are not supposed to leave scheduled stops before the assigned time, this is not always the case. Plus, arriving early means you are able to be calm and collected as you wait, instead of feeling frazzled and rushed.
Be courteous to the bus driver, and to other passengers. This common-sense rule will help make the ride more pleasant for everyone, yourself included.
